Union Pacific marks 163 years with Lincoln locomotive

Union Pacific Railroad has celebrated its 163rd anniversary with a commemorative event in Springfield, Illinois – the hometown of its founder, President Abraham Lincoln. The celebration featured the unveiling of the newly painted No. 1616 “Lincoln Locomotive” and the city’s official recognition as a “Train Town USA”.

President Lincoln authorised the creation of Union Pacific with the signing of the Pacific Railway Act in 1862, laying the foundation for the United States’ transcontinental rail network. The new locomotive, serving as a travelling ambassador for the company, was inspired by the colours and style of the era and pays tribute to the historic No. 119 locomotive present at the 1869 Golden Spike ceremony.

“Union Pacific is incredibly proud of our heritage,” said Liisa Stark, Vice President – Public Affairs at Union Pacific. “We think Lincoln would have been proud of the vital role railroads serve today in delivering the goods and products essential for everyday life in America.”

The locomotive, painted by Union Pacific staff in North Little Rock, Arkansas, debuted earlier this year and made a special appearance in Springfield for the anniversary. The city’s designation as a Train Town USA recognises its historic and ongoing connection to the railroad industry.

“It is an incredible honour for Springfield to host Union Pacific on this milestone and welcome the Lincoln Locomotive,” said Springfield Mayor Misty Buscher. “Abraham Lincoln’s vision helped unite a nation, and that legacy lives on through the railroads that continue to connect communities and drive economic progress.”

The event was supported by the Lincoln Presidential Foundation, Looking for Lincoln, and Hanson Professional Services, and attended by local dignitaries and industry representatives.

Union Pacific remains one of the leading freight rail operators in the US, employing over 30,000 people and transporting goods across sectors including agriculture, energy, manufacturing, and consumer products.
