Alstom has selected companies from the Ukrainian railway industry to manufacture components for the Traxx electric locomotives that will be delivered starting in 2027.
The Ukrainian Railway Company, Ukrzaliznytsia, has provided its French partners with a list of companies it collaborates with on the repair of locomotives and other railway vehicles. Based on this list, Alstom specialists conducted a review and competitive selection of Ukrainian suppliers eligible to participate in the localization of electric locomotive production.
Radio stations, locomotive safety systems, and fire alarm systems, as well as brake system components, couplers, cab heaters, seats, and sanding system components will be manufactured in Ukraine.
Separately, negotiations regarding wheel production are ongoing. This aspect is strategic because an electric locomotive changes its set of wheels at least 10 times over its lifecycle. Therefore, the ability to procure them in Ukraine is not only about localization but also about stability and long-term savings.
The first European-made locomotives
Production of the new electric locomotives for Ukrzaliznytsia has already begun, with the bodies of the first locomotive currently being manufactured. It will arrive in Ukraine in early 2027 for certification and durability testing.
In November 2025, Alstom and Ukrzaliznytsia signed a contract for the delivery of 55 Traxx locomotives intended for freight traffic. These will be delivered progressively through May 2029.
Alstom was selected following an international tender organized by the World Bank, and subsequently, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development joined the project implementation.
The new locomotives are developed based on the Traxx Hauler platform and will become the first European-built electric freight locomotives in Ukraine’s history. They will operate on both alternating current and direct current, making them more versatile and efficient in operation.
In terms of performance, the new locomotives are significantly superior to existing ones. They will have a maximum power of up to 9,000 kW and will be capable of speeds of up to 120 km/h.
This is the largest purchase of electric locomotives in the history of Ukrzaliznytsia, and the fact that the Ukrainian railway industry is participating in their production is particularly important for its own development, as well as for supporting jobs and the economy.
