Turkey deploys 127 next-generation freight wagons in 2025

Turkey has expanded its freight rail capacity with the introduction of 127 domestically produced next-generation freight wagons in 2025, according to Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu.

Speaking on the production achievements of Türkiye Raylı Sistem Araçları Sanayi AŞ (TÜRASAŞ), Uraloğlu highlighted the growing role of locally manufactured wagons in international transport. “In 2025 alone, we have brought 127 next-generation national freight wagons into service,” he said.

The wagons, certified under the European Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI), include the Sggmrs and Sggrs types, both used in domestic and cross-border operations. The Sggmrs model can carry two 45-foot containers, two 40-foot containers, or four 20-foot containers, while the Sggrs can transport two 40-foot or four 20-foot containers.

Uraloğlu emphasised the standout features of the Sggmrs design: at 29.5 metres long, it can carry the load of two standard wagons in one, is 9.5 tonnes lighter than competitors, and offers an additional 4 tonnes of payload capacity compared with equivalent models. “This makes it the most distinctive product in its class,” he noted.

According to the minister, TCDD Taşımacılık A.Ş. transported approximately 1.85 million tonnes of international freight this year, of which 1.35 million tonnes was bound for Europe. “Our next-generation national freight wagons carried 17.4% of freight bound for Europe and 16.4% of all international transport,” he said, adding that their share in the national rail fleet is expected to increase in the coming years.

Uraloğlu concluded that strengthening domestic manufacturing capacity would further enhance Turkey’s logistics capabilities and competitiveness in international markets.
