Turkey announces tender for new automated metro line

Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality, a Turkish province on the coast of Marmara Sea, announced that on 1 February they will initiate the tendering procedure for the construction of a new metro line, between Gebze and Darıca, two urban agglomerations (districts) of Kocaeli Province. The authorities announced that works will begin in 2018 and will be completed in 2022.

The latest technology on automation will be used for this project. (GoA4). In turn, this technology will facilitate a greater traffic performance, lower operation costs, increased viability, as well as shorter train operation intervals. In fact, the authorities announced that metro trains will be placed into operation on the new route at intervals of 90 seconds. The return journey will take 19 minutes.

A metro train will have 4 wagons and a transport capacity of 1,080 passengers. The new, fully automated, metro line will be 15.6-km long, will have 12 stations and will directly connect both the centres of the two districts to Marmaray metro line, in Istanbul. According to the preliminary estimates of Gebze-Darıca metro line project, it will start from Darıca district coast and expand to Gebze Industrial Area. The feasibility study was approved in 2017 by the General Directorate for Infrastructure Investments (AYGM).

For now, there are no details on the estimated costs of the new automated metro project, or on the costs estimated by the authorities for rolling stock procurement.
