TSA to deliver traction systems for AB Transitio new trains

traction motors CAF selected TSA to design and manufacture traction motors for 28 regional trains which will be delivered to Sweden.

The vehicles are part of the Civity Nordic platform and are designed to operate in extreme weather conditions from -40ºC to +40ºC.

The new traction motors were developed with an energy-optimised design to perfectly match the use.

In April 2021, the Swedish company AB Transitio ordered from the Spanish rolling stock manufacturer 20 four-car EMUs and 8 biodiesel – electric bimodal units (BMUs) consisting of 3 cars plus a power car. CAF has scheduled the delivery of the first vehicles to AB Transitio for end of 2022.

The trains are intended for operation in 4 regions in Sweden: Jönköping County, Kalmar County, Kronoberg and Blekinge. The first trains will enter passenger operation on the Krösatågen rail in southern Sweden and Kustpilen rail routes.

Under the contract between AB Transitio and CAF there are mentioned some options which includes orders for 19 additional electric multiple units and 7 BMUs. The base value of the contract worth more than EUR 250 million which will be double when all the specified options will be ordered.

The new vehicles are necessary to meet the growing need to extend the services of public transport. In addition, the fleet which is currently in service, will be replaced in order to improve both the service quality as well as the environmental impact of public rail transport.

In Sweden, CAF also singed a major contract with the SJ rail operator to deliver 25 three-car regional electric trains for the Stockholm-Mälardalen rail network. The EUR 300 million contract is part of SJ’s EUR 1.2 billion investment plans to modernise and expand it train fleet. The new electric multiple units for SJ will enter commercial services in 2025 when they will replace the existing rolling stock.
