Italian rail operator Trenitalia has received the ninth train from its new-generation Frecciarossa fleet, continuing its programme to modernise and expand Italy’s high-speed rail rolling stock.
The new train, numbered Frecciarossa 109, represents another important step in the operator’s strategy to improve passenger services and meet the growing demand for high-speed rail travel across Italy.
The investment is part of a wider programme that will see 74 new-generation Frecciarossa trains enter service by 2031. The objective is to increase transport capacity, enhance passenger comfort and further improve the efficiency of Italy’s high-speed rail network.
Hundreds of millions of euros invested in the future of rail transport
The expansion of the fleet is also supported by a contract signed between Trenitalia, part of the FS Group, and manufacturer Hitachi Rail in March 2026, following the exercise of an additional purchase option. The agreement, worth approximately €260 million, includes the delivery of nine additional next-generation trains and forms part of a 2023 contract covering 36 Frecciarossa trains, with an option for a further 10 units.
The renewal of the Frecciarossa high-speed fleet is included in the FS Group Strategic Plan and aims to provide passengers with an increasingly modern, innovative and sustainable service. From 2029, when two additional deliveries are expected, 57 new trains will be in operation, with plans to increase the total fleet to 74 trains by 2031.
In addition to increasing transport capacity, the new Frecciarossa trains will help reduce operating costs and improve service reliability. They are equipped with advanced technologies designed to enhance safety, energy efficiency and passenger comfort. The fleet renewal programme is considered one of the most significant rail investment projects currently underway in Europe and will support the development of more sustainable mobility in the coming years.
The investment programme reflects Italy’s strategy of strengthening rail transport as a sustainable alternative to road and air travel, in line with European targets to reduce carbon emissions. The new trains are designed to deliver high performance, improved energy efficiency and a superior passenger experience.
Through the continued expansion of the Frecciarossa fleet, Trenitalia is reinforcing its position among Europe’s leading high-speed rail operators. The investments planned through 2031 will contribute to the development of a more modern, faster and more efficient rail network in Italy.
