Hitachi Rail has announced the signing of a contract with Italian operator Trenitalia for the manufacture and delivery of nine more new-generation Frecciarossa trains.
The contract, worth approximately EUR 260 million, complements a previous agreement signed in 2023 for the delivery of 36 trains, to which 10 additional trains were added following a purchase option.
The investment is part of the Frecciarossa fleet renewal program, outlined in the FS Group’s Strategic Plan, and aims to provide an increasingly modern, innovative, and sustainable service.
Starting in 2029, when two additional deliveries are expected, there will be 57 new trains in service, with plans to increase the total number to 74 by 2031.
“With this investment, Trenitalia is taking a step forward in expanding its high-speed train fleet, consolidating the position of Frecciarossa trains as a benchmark in European rail transport,” said Gianpiero Strisciuglio, CEO of Trenitalia.
The new-generation Frecciarossa trains are manufactured by Hitachi Rail at its plants in Italy, in Naples and Pistoia. Designed to operate in Italy and on seven other European rail networks, they represent a symbol of Italian technological and stylistic excellence in the field of high-speed trains, offering the highest standards of performance, comfort, and reliability, with spaces accessible to people with reduced mobility (PRM).
Frecciarossa trains offer unique experiences
They can reach a maximum speed of 300 km/h, with a certified limit of 360 km/h, and are equipped with advanced traction systems for improved efficiency.
In terms of environmental performance, the trains have a 97.1% recyclability rate and a 98.2% material recovery rate, thanks in part to their newly designed electric motors. The new trains retain the current exterior design and color scheme but introduce new elements in the interior and on-board instruments, in an authentic Made in Italy style.
In addition, the trains feature Hitachi Rail’s HMAX for Rail digital suite, a digital asset management system that enables real-time data processing to optimize traffic, maintenance, and energy consumption in rail transport—a new frontier in railway digitalization.
