FS Italiane Group, through its subsidiary Trenitalia France, has ordered 19 more Frecciarossa trains from Hitachi Rail as part of a EUR 2 billion investment.
The new trains will support the company’s expansion plans in France, across high-speed European connections and on the future Paris–London route.
The investment covers the construction of the trains, as well as long-term maintenance and technical support.
The new fleet will enable Trenitalia France, a company controlled by FS International, to strengthen its presence on the Paris–Lyon, Paris–Milan and Paris–Marseille routes by improving service quality and increasing frequencies.
At the same time, the trains will form the fleet for the future high-speed rail connection between Paris and London, which is confirmed to launch in 2029.
The trains are designed to operate across Europe’s main high-speed rail networks. The fleet expansion is an important part of Trenitalia France and the FS Group’s international development strategy, as well as a significant step towards strengthening the strategic partnership between the FS Group and Certares.
New maintenance centre for Frecciarossa trains
To support the expansion of operations, development of the new Maisons-Alfort Pompadour maintenance centre, on the outskirts of Paris, is progressing according to schedule.
The new facility will provide the maintenance capacity required to support the expansion of the fleet and the launch of future international services.
The agreement with Hitachi Rail, together with the related investments in manufacturing, maintenance and infrastructure, is expected to contribute to the creation of approximately 2,000 jobs across France, Italy and the United Kingdom, both directly and throughout the wider industrial supply chain.
The new Frecciarossa trains will offer high standards of comfort, innovation and sustainability. Passengers will benefit from next-generation Wi-Fi connectivity with speeds of up to 10 gigabits per second, a new bistro concept, an enhanced catering offer and completely redesigned interiors aimed at providing a more comfortable travel experience across all classes.
The new fleet will also deliver strong environmental performance. The trains will have a recyclability rate of up to 97.1% and will enable an additional reduction of approximately 120,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions per train, compared with the previous generation.
