Trenitalia is strengthening its presence in the Chinese market through a commercial cooperation agreement signed with the Italian Chamber of Commerce in China.
The agreement aims to support the company’s growth in a market considered strategic for tourism and mobility, as well as to expand development opportunities for Italian rail services.
“Through this agreement, we aim to support the development of Trenitalia’s activities in China, facilitating dialogue with local stakeholders and contributing to the promotion of Italian excellence in mobility, transport, and tourism. In a context marked by growing interest in sustainable mobility and service quality, Italian know-how can make a concrete contribution to strengthening economic cooperation between Italy and China,” stated Gianni Di Giovanni, President of the Italian Chamber of Commerce in China.
Rapidly Growing Market
In 2025, Trenitalia’s sales in China doubled compared to the previous year, and in the first quarter of 2026, passenger numbers also doubled compared to the same period in 2025.
The agreement aims to strengthen Trenitalia’s position in China’s major economic hubs and capitalize on the growing demand for rail travel to Italy, confirming China as a strategic market for the company’s international expansion.
“This partnership represents a concrete step toward strengthening our presence in a high-potential market. “Collaborating with the Chamber of Commerce will help us expand our network of local relationships and promote the travel experience in Italy more effectively,” said Francesco Cacciapuoti, Sales Director at Trenitalia.
The partnership will also enable the development of promotional campaigns better targeted at the Chinese public, with a focus on premium travel experiences in Italy. At the same time, the collaboration opens opportunities for expanding the distribution network and strengthening the Trenitalia brand in Asian markets. In the medium term, the initiative is expected to contribute to increased passenger traffic and the diversification of international sales channels.
In China, Trenitalia’s operations are managed through representative offices or business development offices, in partnership with local institutions, and in particular through cooperation with the Italian Chamber of Commerce in China and other economic promotion entities.
In China, Trenitalia does not operate trains itself nor does it manage the local rail network; rather, it primarily plays a commercial and tourism promotion role.
