Italian airline ITA Airways and rail operator Trenitalia (Gruppo Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane) have signed a memorandum to develop an integrated mobility ecosystem combining rail and air transport.
The agreement was signed by the CEOs of the two companies, Joerg Eberhart (ITA Airways) and Gianpiero Strisciuglio (Trenitalia).
Trains and planes in an integrated mobility system
Through this agreement, the two companies intend to develop services that allow travelers to more easily combine trains, planes, and other modes of transport in a door-to-door travel experience.
The initiative continues the collaboration that began in 2023, when the two companies launched Air–Rail products, which allow combined booking of air and train travel.
According to the companies, the goal is to eliminate operational barriers to intermodal travel and improve connectivity between airports, train stations, and major urban centers.
Laboratory for artificial intelligence-based solutions
The memorandum also provides for the creation of a joint artificial intelligence laboratory for intermodality and sustainability.
These technologies would be used to:
- optimize passenger flows;
- predictively manage transport demand;
- develop integrated digital services;
- reduce CO₂ emissions in transport.
