Tren Maya rolling stock contract signed

Tren Maya fleet The President of Mexico, Manuel López Obrador, has signed the contract for the procurement of Tren Maya fleet with an Alstom-Bombardier led consortium also comprising Gami Ingeniería e Instalaciones and Construcciones Urales Procesos Industriales. In May, Fonatur selected the consortium for its submitted offer that meet the highest score and the lowest cost compared to the proposal of CAF – Rubau consortium.

EUR 1.3 billion (over Mex$31 billion) is the value of the contract, of which the portion for Alstom-Bombardier amounts to nearly EUR 1 billion.

The train project is “quite a challenge because we need to have the trains by 2023 because the Mayan Train has to start operations at the end of 2023,” the President said.

The consortium led by Alstom-Bombardier will be responsible for the design, manufacture and commissioning of 42 X’trapolis trains, as well as the full signalling system including the design, supply and installation of the ETCS onboard technology and over 1,500 km of trackside equipment including ETCS, interlocking, traffic management and telecommunications systems, leveraging the complete Alstom portfolio. The consortium is also responsible for the construction of the maintenance workshops and garages and the after-sales service of the system’s equipment.

The construction of the trains will take place at Ciudad Sahagún plant, in the State of Hidalgo, “that will generate thousands of jobs which will be in charge of Alstom and Bombardier, the winner of the tender,” Manuel López Obrador noted.

Alstom’s new X’trapolis model for Tren Maya will leverage the group’s manufacturing and engineering potential to produce a train that is up-to-date, competitive, and reliable in the long term. This train will also use components and expertise contributed by the former Bombardier, the most outstanding being its lightweight Flexx Eco bogie, designed for a maximum speed of 176 km/h.

“This is a very important act because the trains are already going to be obtained. They are of three types of rolling stock: a freight train, other trainsets for passengers travelling in the region and a train dedicated for tourism”, the President said.

The design of the three types of trains – Xiinbal (“to walk”), Janal (“to eat”) and P’atal (“to stay”) – is exclusive to Mexico and inspired by the Mayan culture, where the majestic jaguar’s lines, speed and beauty were inspirational elements for the train, Maite Ramos, the General Director of Alstom México explained.

The Tren Maya fleet of X’trapolis trainsets will be offered in three distinct configurations. The Xiinbal version will be designed in a flexible and comfortable standard service set-up, the second is prioritising restaurant cars (Janal) and the third version is designed in a long-distance sleeper configuration (P’atal). All versions offer passengers ample legroom at their seats and plenty of space to move around. Passengers will have more than enough room to store their luggage, with overhead racks borrowed from Alstom’s intercity train Coradia, and vertical racks in each car.

The trains will have flat floor trains to meet the needs of passengers with reduced mobility. The  X’trapolis trains will be equipped with high-performance HVAC system and will have wide windows onto the breath-taking scenery of the Maya region.
