Track laying begins in Krakow

PKP Polish Railway Lines has started the construction of the new tracks the center of Krakow, between Krakow Główny and Krakow Płaszów, including the construction of a new stop at Kraków Grzegórzki.
Four railway tracks, including two additional ones on the most urbanized section of the route and flyovers will be constructed. Within the next weeks, the traction network will be installed, and load tests of new facilities will be carried out, which are necessary to obtain a use permit.
The first trains will run on the new track between Kraków Główny and Płaszów, after flyovers, viaducts, bridges and embankments will be ready for operation. Achieving this stage of the investment will allow PLK to move on to the next important stages of the work. This includes for the demolition of the old railway embankment, which will allow the construction of the remaining three tracks.
The project envisages the upgrade of 20-km rail section in the Krakow junction inclusive of signalling system. It entails the implementation of modernisation works on the railway line no E30, Krakow Glowny Towarowy -Rudzice section, along with the construction of metropolitan line tracks on the Krakow Glowny -Krakow Paszow-Krakow Bielanow section.
The implementation of the project will result in the removal bottlenecks due to increased capacity and in shorter travel time. Interoperability and safety will be improved due to the upgrade of the parameters of the railway infrastructure.
The project is important for domestic and international connections and also for the expansion of the metropolitan railway connections. The objective is to increase technical parameters to improve the attractiveness and competitiveness of rail transport both for passenger and freight. In long term, it will enable the connection of terminals from the border of Ukraine to German.
The main construction works will end in 2020, and the entire project in mid-2021. It is part of ‘Works on the E30 railway line, Kraków Główny Towarowy-Rudzice section, including the construction of metropolitan line tracks’ project. The total value of the project is EUR 240.9 million of which EUR 195 million is the EU contribution through CEF.
