Alstom’s last Flexity tram for Toronto was put into service on January 13, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) announced.
Toronto and Alstom celebrated the delivery of the 60th Flexity tram, thus completing the contract signed in 2021, financed by the Government of Canada and the Province of Ontario with USD 130 million each, and by the City of Toronto, with a sum of USD 150 million.
“These Ontario-made trams provide fast and reliable service to Toronto commuters, connecting communities and transforming the way people move around the city,” said Prabmeet Sarkaria, Ontario’s Minister of Transportation.
With all 60 vehicles now in service, the TTC has expanded its tram fleet by nearly 30%, a major step in modernizing Toronto’s public transit system and providing more reliable and accessible service throughout the city.
The first Alstom Flexity tram entered service in November 2023, and the last one arrived in Toronto at the end of 2025.
The Flexity trams delivered by Alstom to the TTC are 100% low-floor, five-module, unidirectional vehicles. They are based on light rail technology, adapted to the specifications and special requirements of the Toronto tram network.
The 60 new trams for Toronto have been added to the existing fleet of 204 Alstom trams already carrying passengers in the Greater Toronto Area. The vehicles were manufactured at the Thunder Bay, Ontario plant, with support from Alstom’s La Pocatière, Québec facility. Nearly 400 highly skilled Alstom employees in Canada contributed to ensuring the flawless implementation of this project.
In addition to the purchase of the 60 Flexity trams, the Canadian government’s USD 180 million contribution is also being used to modernize the Hillcrest complex so that it can provide maintenance for the new trams. Construction work on the Hillcrest facility is currently underway, having started on March 6, 2025.
Alstom has previously delivered trams to Toronto, including the Citadis model for the new Finch West light rail line, which opened to traffic in December 2025.
With 11 tram lines totaling 308 km, the TTC network is the largest and busiest in North America. In 2024, passengers made over 34.5 million tram journeys.
