Three suppliers shortlisted for Lokaltog’s new battery trains

Lokaltog, part of the Danish public transport authority Movia, has shortlisted three rolling stock manufacturers to submit final bids for the supply of new battery-electric trains and charging infrastructure for the Nærum Line (Nærumbanen) in the Capital Region of Denmark.

The new trains will replace four ageing diesel multiple units from 1999, which currently serve passengers on Denmark’s shortest private railway.

Three shortlisted suppliers

Following a prequalification process, the following suppliers have been invited to submit final tenders:

  • Bozankaya Rayli Sistemler A.S. (Turkey) in cooperation with Efacec Engenharia e Sistemas S.A. (Portugal)

  • Končar Inc. (Croatia)

  • Stadler Deutschland GmbH (Germany) in cooperation with Furrer+Frey AG (Switzerland)

“Three experienced and well-qualified bidders”

“We are very pleased that three experienced and well-qualified bidders are participating in the next phase,” said Lars Wrist-Elkjær, CEO of Lokaltog. “They all have the necessary experience and expertise in the delivery of battery trains and charging infrastructure and are capable of meeting the specific requirements we have set in the tender material.

“This is a relatively small-scale tender in railway terms, and on that basis it is particularly encouraging to see the strong level of interest from the train manufacturing market.”

Four battery trains to replace diesel fleet

The tender covers the delivery of four battery-electric trainsets and associated charging infrastructure. According to the current plan approved by the Capital Region of Denmark, the new trains are expected to enter passenger service on the Nærum Line between late 2029 and late 2030.

The exact entry-into-service date will be determined once the contract has been awarded and signed. Lokaltog expects to conclude the contract with the selected supplier in autumn 2026.

Modernisation of Denmark’s shortest private railway

The Nærum Line runs 7.8 kilometres between Jægersborg and Nærum, serving eight stations. Around 750,000 passengers travel on the route each year.

The line’s current fleet consists of RegioSprinter diesel units built in 1999, which are approaching the end of their operational life. Replacement has become increasingly necessary due to rising maintenance costs and difficulties in sourcing spare parts.

Background and timeline

In September 2024, the Regional Council of the Capital Region decided to launch a procurement process for new battery trains for the Nærum Line as part of Denmark’s wider shift toward sustainable and zero-emission regional transport.

Tender timeline:

  • September 2025: Tender notice published

  • October 2025: Prequalification results announced

  • June 2026: Deadline for final bids

  • September 2026: Evaluation and supplier selection

  • October 2026: Contract signing

  • 2029–2030: Expected delivery and commissioning of new battery trains
