The Santo Domingo Metro receives its first Metropolis trains

Alstom has delivered the first two of eight new trains for the Santo Domingo Metro. The delivery is part of a contract signed for eight three-car Metropolis trains that will operate on the Line 2 metro extension, a project carried out by the Office for Transport Reorganization (OPRET).

“The delivery of the first trains for the extension of Line 2 of the Santo Domingo Metro is an important milestone for Alstom and for urban mobility in the country. This project reflects our long-term commitment to the Dominican Republic and to the development of modern, safe, and sustainable transport solutions, in close collaboration with OPRET,” said Maite Ramos, General Manager for Northern Latin America at Alstom.

Metropolis trains are manufactured at Alstom’s plant in Santa Perpétua, Barcelona, and are part of a comprehensive strategy to modernize and expand the public transit network in the Dominican capital.

The contract for the new trains was signed in 2024, and in 2023, Alstom won another contract to deliver 10 Metropolis trains for Line 1.

Metropolis for the Santo Domingo Metro

Alstom is delivering three individual cars from Spain to the Dominican Republic, and upon arrival, the cars are coupled together and undergo final inspections prior to delivery. After delivery, the trains will be integrated into the system, including final testing in the Santo Domingo metro environment.

“These new trains represent a concrete step forward for urban mobility in Santo Domingo. This project reflects the joint effort between OPRET and Alstom, aimed at providing an increasingly efficient, safe, and reliable system, keeping pace with growing demand and improving the daily experience of metro users,” commented Jhael Isa, director of OPRET.

The delivered trains will be integrated into the Santo Domingo metro system and will undergo rigorous testing on the network prior to entering commercial service. During this phase, OPRET will validate key systems under real-world operating conditions, particularly the introduction of a new generation of braking systems. This work complements the tests previously conducted by Alstom at our factory. Increased capacity and an improved travel experience.

These new Metropolis trains offer better amenities for passengers and rail operations, including wider doors to facilitate passenger flow, advanced passenger information systems, LED lighting, and driver’s cabs equipped with state-of-the-art technology.

In addition, the trains can operate in multiple-unit configurations, allowing for increased system capacity based on demand. Alstom is currently working to enhance operational compatibility between different train series, with the aim of optimizing commercial operations.

Line 2 Extension

The extension of Line 2C, which will connect María Montez Station with Los Alcarrizos, represents a key step forward in improving mobility in Santo Domingo, benefiting over 14 communities by facilitating transportation, reducing travel times, and alleviating congestion on major roads.

The extension involves the construction of a 7.3-kilometer section with five stations, between the María Montez station and the future Los Alcarrizos station. The project includes a 900-meter underground section and a 6.45-kilometer elevated section.
