Starting June 15, 2026, a special ticket will be introduced in the Netherlands for summer rail travel under the name “Nederland Dal Vrij Trein” (Dutch Off-Peak Free Train). This product is designed to offer passengers the opportunity to travel by train more affordably during off-peak hours throughout the summer season.
The new pass will be valid during the summer and is a measure intended to encourage the use of rail transport instead of private cars, given the high cost of fuel.
“It’s great that we can finally get started. Starting June 15, everyone can travel by train at a lower cost during off-peak hours. It’s an excellent opportunity to discover train travel and leave the car at home, especially during this period of high fuel prices. This is how we’re working toward accessible public transportation,” said State Secretary for Public Transport and Rail Infrastructure, Annet Bertram.
Discounted Summer Rail Pass
The decision to introduce this special ticket in the Netherlands is part of a government support package adopted in response to rising energy costs and fuel prices. The measure was approved by the legislative authorities and implemented in collaboration with rail operators.
The national operator NS (Nederlandse Spoorwegen), together with other rail operators, will officially introduce the “Nederland Dal Vrij Trein” product.
“It’s great that public transport is seen as a solution to high fuel prices. Outside of peak hours, there is often plenty of room for additional passengers, and summer is the ideal time to do this. For existing passengers, it’s an excellent opportunity. Every new passenger is welcome, and we invite them to discover the Netherlands by train,” said NS CEO Wouter Koolmees.
This special ticket will allow unlimited travel in second class on all domestic trains from June 15 to August 31, during off-peak hours and on weekends. The cost is 49 EUR per month, making it an adapted version of the existing NS Flex Dal Vrij rail pass.
To facilitate rapid implementation, the product is compatible with current ticketing systems and can be purchased either from ticket machines at stations or online. The pass can be used until July 31 for new users and is available with monthly payment and a flexible cancellation option.
Monitoring the Impact on Mobility
The goal of introducing this special ticket is to increase passenger numbers during the summer season and encourage the shift from road to rail transport, as well as to familiarize new users with train travel.
Authorities will analyze the measure’s impact, including passenger profiles, reasons for use, and potential changes in mobility behavior.
At the same time, the Dutch government continues to prioritize public transport accessibility, in a context where operational costs and mobility demand are constantly changing.
