The Madrid Metro will install 40 cooling units in 20 metro stations on Lines 1 and 5 to improve platform ventilation during periods of high temperatures. The measure is being implemented for the third consecutive year and will be complemented by additional checks of the air conditioning systems on trains.
The units began operating on June 4, earlier than in previous years, following warnings of rising temperatures. Regional authorities say the goal is to improve comfort for passengers and Madrid Metro employees.
The cooling systems run on water and will be activated between 11:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m., when outdoor temperatures exceed 30 degrees Celsius or when Spain’s State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, announces heat waves.
Stations on Lines 1 and 5
On Line 1, the equipment will be installed at the stations Sol, Chamartín, Alvarado, Iglesia, Antón Martín, Estación del Arte, Atocha, Puente de Vallecas, Buenos Aires, and Alto del Arenal.
On Line 5, the systems will be installed at the stations Callao, Alonso Martínez, Gran Vía, Chueca, Ópera, Diego de León, Núñez de Balboa, La Latina, Puerta de Toledo, and Acacias.
In total, 40 cooling units will be used, distributed across the 20 stations.
More checks on train air conditioning
In addition to the measures at stations, Metro de Madrid will intensify periodic checks on the air conditioning systems of all trains operating on the network during the summer months.
In the event of a specific malfunction, the affected train will be sent immediately for repairs, and the issue should be resolved within a maximum of one day.
To maintain a cooler temperature inside the train cars, Metro de Madrid will disable the automatic opening of train doors during this period. Thus, the doors will only open when activated by passengers, reducing the loss of cool air at stations.
