The Madrid Metro is preparing for Pope Leo XIV’s visit

The Madrid Metro is preparing for Pope Leo XIV’s visit, scheduled for June 6–9, with a specially wrapped train on Line 4, limited-edition transit cards, and extended hours to accommodate returning pilgrims. The Madrid region anticipates a high volume of visitors during the apostolic journey.

Jorge Rodrigo, the regional minister for housing, transportation, and infrastructure, presented the special measures during a metro ride between the Velázquez station and the Avenida de América transit hub on Line 4.

Madrid authorities are expecting a high number of pilgrims and visitors during Pope Leo XIV’s apostolic journey. For this event, the Regional Transport Consortium has launched a limited edition of the anonymous Multi transit card, featuring a commemorative design inspired by the pontiff’s visit.

The cards will be available for purchase at the usual price of EUR 2.5 from vending machines at 40 stations marked with the pope’s image, making them easier for passengers to identify.

Special-decorated train on Metro Line 4

Metro Madrid has also put a specially wrapped train into service, which will run on Line 4 until June 12. The train serves the line’s 23 stations and is decorated with commemorative images and the official motto of the visit, “Alzad la mirada,” roughly translated as “Lift up your gaze.”

“The train will run throughout the Holy Father’s stay in the capital and is part of the special plan prepared to handle the expected increase in ridership during these days,” explained Jorge Rodrigo.

Intercity buses in the region will also be included in the visual campaign. Part of the fleet will run with stickers dedicated to Pope Leo XIV, carrying the message of the visit to towns throughout the Madrid region.

The metro will run until 2:30 a.m.

Beyond these symbolic measures, authorities have also prepared schedule changes.

Metro Madrid will extend its regular schedule by one hour on the night of June 6–7, until 2:30 a.m., to facilitate the return of pilgrims and participants in the religious event presided over by the Pope in Plaza de Lima.
