On 19 December 2025, His Majesty King Frederik of Denmark officially inaugurated the country’s first battery-powered trains.

King Frederik took part in the inaugural journey to Lemvig, during which there were musical entertainment and official speeches at the stations, as well as time to speak with commuters, train staff, and specially invited train enthusiasts.
At stops in several towns along the route, locals gathered to celebrate the event, and the King had the opportunity on multiple occasions to greet attendees along the entire railway line. Upon arrival at Lemvig Station, the King passed through a large red ribbon, officially marking the inauguration.
The seven Mireo Plus B trains, produced by Siemens Mobility for the Danish operator Midtjyske Jernbaner, will now enter passenger service on the Holstebro–Skjern and Vemb–Lemvig–Thyborøn lines, replacing diesel trains and providing quiet, emission-free rail transport in the West Jutland region.
The introduction of these battery-powered trains represents a significant step in Denmark’s efforts to decarbonise its public transport system. For Midtjyske Jernbaner, this step achieves the ambitious goal of becoming Denmark’s greenest railway. The new trains offer commuters and families in West Jutland a greatly improved travel experience, with modern amenities, higher frequency, and increased capacity.
“The country’s first battery-powered trains represent an important step in our efforts to replace emission-producing trains. When we made the decision six years ago to replace diesel trains with more climate-friendly alternatives, we knew very little about this technology. Today, we are proud to launch Denmark’s first battery-powered train. It has been a long and exciting journey, and we would like to extend our sincere thanks to Siemens Mobility for the excellent collaboration,” said Martha Vrist, CEO of Midtjyske Jernbaner.
The Mireo Plus B two-car trainsets offer seating for 127 passengers, a top speed of 140 km/h, and a battery-powered range of around 80 kilometres. They feature a hybrid battery drive and can be charged via the 25 kV overhead line on electrified sections. On non-electrified routes, the batteries power the train, enabling completely CO₂-free and low-noise operation. The fleet for Midtjyske Jernbaner will provide passengers with a significantly enhanced travel experience, including modern amenities such as Wi-Fi and passenger information systems, increased comfort, and higher capacity. The trains have a lightweight, energy-efficient design and are built with sustainable materials.
The order, placed in 2022, was the first for Mireo Plus B trains outside Germany, where the Mireo platform is already a success, with over 295 trains in operation.
