The first X’trapolis 2.0 electric train set manufactured by Alstom has entered service in Melbourne, Australia. The train is part of an initial EUR 300 million order for 25 units placed by the Victorian state government and is manufactured locally by Alstom at its facilities in Dandenong and Ballarat, Australia.
“The entry into service of the first X’trapolis 2.0 train is a moment of pride for everyone involved. I would like to thank the Alstom team, as well as our partners at the Victorian Department of Transport and Planning and Metro Trains Melbourne, for the excellent collaboration that made this achievement possible. The strength of these partnerships has led to the realization of a truly significant project—a train built in Victoria for the residents of Melbourne,” said Guillaume Tritter, Alstom’s managing director for Australia and New Zealand.
Based on the Adessia commuter train platform, the six-car X’trapolis 2.0 electric train is energy-efficient and can carry up to 1,225 passengers. It features a design with continuous circulation between cars, wider doors for rapid boarding, and significant accessibility improvements.
The new trains offer extensive accessibility features, including 20 dedicated wheelchair spaces, areas for strollers, bicycles, and mixed-use, semi-automatic ramps, tactile signage, hearing assistance technologies, and an improved interface between the conductor and the train’s systems. In total, 58 design adjustments were made following consultations with passengers, staff, and other stakeholders to adapt the train to Melbourne’s needs.

The X’trapolis 2.0 project also stands out for its requirement of at least 60% local content, thereby helping to support the railway supply chain in the state of Victoria, securing hundreds of manufacturing jobs and up to 750 jobs in the local industry.
As deliveries continue, new X’trapolis 2.0 trains will be gradually introduced into passenger service. The Victorian government has also announced budget allocations for an additional 25 trains, which could bring the total fleet to 50 units.
The Victorian State Budget for 2026/2027 provides for an investment of USD 673.6 million (USD 410 million) for the delivery of 25 locally produced X’Trapolis 2.0 trains.
The investment also supports approximately 750 jobs in the state of Victoria. In total, the Victorian State Government has funded 50 X’Trapolis 2.0 electric trains.
The first 25 units are set to enter service in the coming period on the Craigieburn, Upfield, and Frankston lines.
