The first two Škoda trains for Bulgaria have been shipped after successfully completing dynamic and safety tests in the Czech Republic.
The two electric multiple units are the first of 25 modern four-car trains that will soon transform the Bulgarian railway system.
“The shipment of the first two trains marks an important moment. Production of the other units is progressing according to schedule, ensuring the timely delivery of the entire rolling stock fleet,” said Olesea Lachi, Škoda Group Vice President for Southern and Eastern Europe.
The new trains are part of a contract signed in September 2024 for the delivery of 25 RegioPanter multiple units, with a firm order for 20 four-car trains. A few months later, Bulgaria, through the Ministry of Transport, exercised the option for five more multiple units. The total value, including options, is over EUR 500 million. The contracts include the provision of maintenance services for a period of 15 years.
The new Škoda trains offer high quality
The Škoda trains for Bulgaria have a capacity of over 300 comfortable seats, are equipped with air conditioning, and offer low noise levels during operation.
The trains reach a maximum speed of 160 km/h and will operate on electrified lines at 25 kV AC 50 Hz.
Passengers will benefit from ergonomic seats, air-conditioned interiors, and Wi-Fi connectivity on board. Safety will be enhanced by an advanced video camera system, both outside and inside. The trains will also have a partially lowered floor to ensure full accessibility for all passengers. For fast, safe, and convenient passenger exchange, the trains will have low-level access and 1,500 mm wide doors. The vehicles will also include multifunctional spaces for people with disabilities, strollers, or bicycles.
The new RegioPanter electric multiple units will also integrate advanced digital technology developed by the Škoda Group, which will ensure greater reliability and increased passenger safety. The units will be equipped with the ETCS Level 2 system, which guarantees the highest safety requirements in accordance with European standards.
The accessible RegioPanter electric units are a popular and proven model produced by the Škoda Group. They are already in operation in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Latvia, and have recently been delivered to Estonia, where they have already begun trial operations.
