The first C2 Munich metro trains to enter services

C2 Munich metro trainsThe first 4 new C2 Munich metro trains will enter passenger operation by the end of this week, offering increased capacity, comfort, and passenger safety. The new trains will serve city’s U2, U3 and U6 lines. Siemens Mobility has delivered the first of the 24 C2 metro trains in June 2019.

The new trains will be deployed on the existing routes of the Munich Metro, covering 100 track kilometers. They are to replace the 40 year-old trains of the Stadtwerke München.

The new metro trains, built in the Siemens plants in Vienna, Austria, and in Munich-Allach, Germany, are cost-efficient through modern and energy-saving systems.

The train design concept was developed by Neumeister + Partner Industrial Design and is was realized in close co-operation with Munich transit company MVG.

The interior and exterior design is based on the design of the C1 predecessor, but some design aspects have been further developed. Compared to the previous model (C1), the new train C2 is characterized by a higher passenger capacity and a significantly improved lighting system, which is completely equipped with LED lights.

A six-car train is capable of carrying a total of up to 940 passengers each, with 220 seats and standing room for 720 passengers.

The new trains are equipped with passenger information system that provides both visual and audio information inside and outside the train, with CCTV system installed in the passenger compartment offering increased safety.

Each end of the train is equipped with a driver’s cab, designed in accordance with high ergonomically requirements.

In November 2010, Stadtwerke München awarded Siemens Mobility a EUR 185 million contract to supply 21 six-car metro trains with an option for further 46 trains. A first option for 24 trains was ordered in 2016. The total value for C2 Munich metro trains reaches EUR 550 million, city’s historical largest investment for rolling stock procurement.
