The 600 km/h train: the Japanese project that is rewriting the rules of rail travel

Japan is currently testing what could become the fastest train in history. The L0 Series prototype, based on magnetic levitation (maglev) technology, is being tested at speeds of up to 603.5 km/h, a threshold that far exceeds the high-speed trains currently in commercial operation in both Europe and Asia.

The train is being developed and tested by the Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central) and will run on the future Chūō Shinkansen line, currently under construction between Tokyo, Nagoya, and, later, Osaka.

Travel times dramatically reduced: Tokyo–Nagoya in 40 minutes

Currently, a train journey between Tokyo and Nagoya takes between approximately one and a half hours and over two hours, depending on the service chosen. With the introduction of the L0 Series train, this time would be reduced to approximately 40 minutes, covering a distance of about 286 km.

Extending the line to Osaka would transform Japan’s three major cities into a single interconnected urban region, with travel times comparable to those of short-haul air travel.

To provide a more easily understandable European benchmark, a train with similar performance would cover the distance between Bucharest and Oradea (approximately 600 km) in about an hour, compared to the 10–12 hours currently required by conventional rail.

Why is the L0 Series so fast?

Extreme speeds are possible thanks to maglev technology, which eliminates physical contact between the train and the track. The train is lifted and guided by magnetic fields, and propulsion is provided by a linear electric motor, which drastically reduces friction and mechanical wear.

In commercial operation, the train would run at speeds of around 500 km/h, while a record speed of over 600 km/h has already been achieved in tests since 2015.

Huge costs and major delays

However, technological ambition comes at a price. The costs of the Chūō Shinkansen project have already reached approximately EUR 60 billion, and the inauguration, initially scheduled for 2027, has been postponed by almost a decade. A more realistic deadline indicated by the Japanese press is now 2034–2035.

The main difficulties are related to underground works: a large part of the route must be built in special tunnels, which are necessary for the stability of the train at very high speeds.

Could such a train operate in Europe?

Although the idea of a train traveling at over 600 km/h is fascinating, experts are skeptical about applying the Japanese model in Europe. A maglev train cannot use existing infrastructure and requires completely dedicated lines, which are extremely expensive.

In addition, the system consumes more energy and has a lower capacity than conventional high-speed trains, making it difficult to recoup the investment. In Europe, where the emphasis is also on comfort, accessibility, and the integration of existing networks, such a project would only make sense on a few strictly functional routes, such as Paris–London or Brussels–London.

China, a technological rival in the background

Meanwhile, China is accelerating the development of its own high-speed maglev train, recently unveiled by CRRC Changchun. The new prototype aims for a top speed of 600 km/h, close to that of the Japanese L0 Series train.

The train could reduce the travel time between Beijing and Shanghai to 2.5–3 hours, compared to about four hours currently. The system uses a hybrid concept: the train travels on wheels at low speeds and enters magnetic levitation mode above a threshold of approximately 150 km/h.

Although the Chinese authorities have not announced a clear timetable for commercial operation, the project is seen as an attempt to close the gap with Japan and occupy the speed range between classic high-speed rail transport and aviation.

A spectacular but uncertain future

In both Japan and China, maglev trains traveling at over 600 km/h remain, for now, projects with a strong symbolic and technological role. High costs, limited demand, and integration difficulties raise questions about their large-scale economic viability.

One thing is clear, however: the competition for the “train of the future” has moved into a league where Europe, at least for now, is only a spectator.
