Thailand approves USD 2.5 billion rail project

Thailand’s Government has approved the construction of a double-track line between Den Chai, Chiang Rai and Chiang Khong, in the northern part of the country.
The authorities committed to carry out this project, with a budget of USD 2.56 billion (THB 85.3 billion) and will allot the needed funding on a yearly basis. In addition, the Ministry of Finance was also asked to seek loans to finance the project
An electronic bidding will be launched for the project, which is scheduled to be completed within seven years and the construction is expected to begin in 2019.
The double-track line will have a total length of 323 kilometers. It starts at the Den Chai station in Phrae province and moves toward the North, passing through Lampang, Phayao, and Chiang Rai. The project ends at the Chiang Khong border checkpoint in Chiang Rai.
The project will help increase the potential of Thailand for transport, trade, and domestic and international tourism. It is also in line with the National Strategy, which sets directions for the development of Thailand in the next 20 years.
