Tender launched for the construction of the Warsaw Airport–Modlin line

PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe (PKP PLK), Poland’s infrastructure manager, has launched the tender procedure for the construction of the Warsaw Airport–Modlin line, one of the most important infrastructure projects in the Mazovia region.

The new line will connect Modlin Station to Warsaw Modlin Airport, the city’s second airport after Warsaw Chopin, which primarily serves low-cost airlines. The line will be double-track and electrified, with a length of 5.5 km. The project also includes the expansion of Modlin Station with a new track and a 200-meter platform, the construction of a railway station directly at the airport terminal, the development of a freight station, and the construction of three road viaducts.

“A direct rail connection to Modlin Airport will offer convenience and save time. This investment will provide significant convenience for thousands of passengers every day,” said Infrastructure Minister Dariusz Klimczak.

The estimated cost of the project is EUR 60 million. Between 2016 and 2026, the Mazovia Voivodeship government allocated nearly EUR 5 million for pre-design and design work. The investment is part of the project “Construction of the line section from Modlin Station to Warsaw/Modlin Airport and the Mazowiecki Port Lotniczy railway station.” Funding is provided by the European program “European Funds for Mazovia 2021–2027,” supplemented by a contribution from regional authorities, which have allocated a total of EUR 39 million and financed the technical documentation.

In December 2023, PLK signed a design contract worth nearly EUR 1 million with a consortium consisting of Infra-Centrum Doradztwa and YLE Inżynierowie.

Work is scheduled to begin in 2027, with completion estimated for 2029.

Integrated rail and air transport

The new connection will speed up access to the airport and integrate air and rail transport. Currently, to reach the terminal, passengers must transfer from the train at Modlin Station to a bus. Thanks to this investment, passengers will have convenient access to the terminal area, as well as a direct connection to the center of Warsaw.

“This is an important and long-awaited investment. It is important to note that the line will connect two airports in Warsaw. The investment itself will support the development of Warsaw-Modlin Airport, which plans to increase capacity and launch new routes,” said Adam Struzik, Marshal of the Mazovia Voivodeship.

The project will significantly improve regional mobility by reducing travel time and integrating the airport into the national rail network. In addition, it will enable a more efficient connection to downtown Warsaw and other major transportation hubs.

The main objective of the Warsaw-Modlin Airport line project is to provide direct, fast, and comfortable train access to the airport terminal, in partnership with regional authorities.
