Adif will launch the tender for the renewal of signaling equipment on Madrid’s C-5 commuter line (part of the Madrid Cercanías network), after receiving authorization from the Spanish government. The contract is estimated to be worth EUR 32 million and may be co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
The contract covers a 20.7-km section between Embajadores and Móstoles-El Soto, which includes 11 stations. The project involves the installation of new, high-performance equipment for all systems comprising the railway signaling system.
The contract is also part of the Madrid Cercanías Plan and includes the installation of new, state-of-the-art equipment for all components of the railway signaling system. These will also be prepared for the future implementation of the most advanced rail traffic management system, ERTMS Level 2.
The project includes the installation of electronic components that remotely manage the signals on a rail section at the stations of Aluche, Embajadores, Cuatro Vientos, Alcorcón, and Móstoles-El Soto. In addition, all side signals will be replaced with new ones based on LED technology.
A new signaling system will also be implemented on this section to ensure adequate spacing between trains, allowing trains to run in both directions on both lines, thereby increasing traffic capacity and flexibility. In addition, new track circuits for train position detection will be installed, and the Asfa Digital traffic management system will be implemented.
To power and manage these systems, fiber-optic cables will be installed, along with improvements to the power supply and uninterruptible backup power systems.
Expansion of Madrid’s commuter rail network continues
Through this tender, Adif is launching one of the main initiatives in the comprehensive rehabilitation plan for Madrid’s C-5 commuter rail line, which has a value of EUR 1.35 billion.
In addition to modernizing the C-5 line, this project represents a new step forward in the implementation of the “Madrid Suburban Rail Plan,” which currently includes dozens of projects being carried out simultaneously by Adif.
These include the expansion of the commuter rail network, such as the extension to Soto del Real or the doubling of the Pinar de Las Rozas–Las Matas section, as well as the modernization of certain lines, such as Cercedilla–Cotos.
Also included are projects to modernize equipment and stations, as well as the construction of new stations (Pinto La Tenería, Parla Norte, and Tres Cantos Norte).
