Telent has been awarded a major contract by Network Rail to deliver a telecoms renewal programme across the Wales and Western Region as part of Control Period 7 (CP7). This marks the first telecoms-only framework to be awarded in CP7, covering the areas from London to Penzance, Bristol, the Cotswolds, and Wales.
Telent will enhance operational efficiency, improve passenger experiences, and ensure greater reliability through a comprehensive upgrade of critical telecom systems. This includes renewing Station Information and Security Systems (SISS), such as customer information displays, Video Surveillance Systems (VSS), and public address systems at Network Rail-managed stations, with notable upgrades planned for Bristol Temple Meads.
The mobilisation of the project is already underway, with Telent collaborating closely with Network Rail on planning and designing FTN power renewals for over 480 sites across the region.
“We’re proud to build on the success of previous projects in the Wales and Western region. This telecom renewals programme will significantly enhance communications systems, ensuring a more reliable and efficient railway for passengers and operators alike,” Kevin Bonanno, Director of Rail at Telent, said.
“Upgrading our telecoms infrastructure is essential to maintaining a safe, dependable, and efficient railway. Telent’s expertise will play a crucial role in modernising critical communication systems, supporting passenger assistance, and improving rail operations across the region,” Richard Cundy, Regional Telecoms Asset & Performance Manager for Network Rail’s Wales and Western Region, added.
The telecoms renewal programme is set to be completed by March 2029, with plans for a potential contract extension into Control Period 8 (CP8).
