Tampere tram extension under EIB review

The European Investment Bank (EIB) is proposing a EUR 215 million financing for the construction of Tampere tram extension linking the city with the surrounding municipalities. If the loan is approved, it will also support the extension of the tram depot at Hervanta as well as the purchase of 7 new trams and 8 extension cars.

EUR 455 million is the total eligible cost of the project covering the construction of a 13.6 km of tram line from Tampere to Pirkkala and to Linnainmaa, in Finland. Tampere tram extension will be built in two branches.

The length of the planned tramway between Sori Square and Suuppa in Pirkkala is about 9.3 km, with 11 pairs of tram stops planned for the section. The planned tramway between Kauppi Campus and Linnainmaa is 4.3 km long and will include four pairs of stops. The tram stop locations have been chosen so as to maximise the number of existing and future services, residents and jobs within a radius of about 800 metres.

The construction of the project is being carried out in two stages, with the first currently underway and expected to be completed in August 2028.

In the second phase, the construction of the tramway will continue from Partola to Suupa and from Niihama stop to Linnainmaa. Tram traffic to Suuppa and Linnainmaa is scheduled to start in early 2032.

The Pirkkala-Linnainmaa Alliance for Tampere Tramway is building a new tramway section with related street and traffic arrangements.

The project also involves the construction of nine power supply stations, and 11 new bridges.

The development phase of the Pirkkala-Linnainmaa Alliance for Tampere Tramway started in October 2023. During the development phase, an implementation plan was drawn up for the tramway and related street, traffic and tram stop arrangements for the sections from Hatanpää highway to Suuppa in Pirkkala and from Tays Hospital to Linnainmaa.
