The Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) and Talgo have signed a contract for the delivery of a new rolling stock fleet worth EUR 756 million.

The signing ceremony took place on 20 April, in the presence of Sweden’s Minister for Infrastructure and Housing, Andreas Carlson, Trafikverket Director General Roberto Maiorana, the Ambassador of Spain to Sweden, Luis Cuesta, and Talgo Chairman José Antonio Jainaga.

The contract covers the supply and full maintenance of a new rolling stock fleet, including long-distance day and night trains as well as locomotives. The vehicles will operate on routes covering the southern part of the country, including Stockholm, extending to the northernmost cities, including areas located above the Arctic Circle.

The agreement includes an initial order of 10 locomotives, 9 day trains, and 11 night train sets from Talgo’s Intercity 230 platform. Sweden also has the option to expand the initial order through additional rolling stock purchases and an extension of the maintenance period, initially set at ten years. The maintenance extension will run for a further two years and will include spare parts and special tools.

New rolling stock fleet capable of 200 km/h

“These trains, which will be part of the Talgo 230 platform, will be capable of operating at speeds of up to 200 km/h. Given the extreme climatic conditions they will face, with temperatures reaching as low as -40°C during Nordic winters, Talgo will develop a comprehensive set of technical solutions designed to ensure safety, operational reliability, service availability, and above all, maximum passenger comfort,” said the company’s chairman.

The signed order consists of modular trains capable of reaching a commercial speed of 200 km/h in Sweden and Norway, with full interoperability enabling seamless cross-border operations. In the future, the platform could also be extended to other Central European countries.

The trains will operate long-distance services at latitudes above the Arctic Circle, with Talgo guaranteeing full functionality, comfort, and safety under extreme conditions, including temperatures down to -40°C during the boreal winter. The company has extensive experience in designing, manufacturing, and operating trains in temperature ranges from -40°C (Russia and Kazakhstan) to +50°C (Saudi Arabia).

The Talgo 230 trains will have a maximum speed of 200 km/h and are already in service in Scandinavia within the Danish operator DSB fleet (branded as EuroCity), where they operate daily services between Copenhagen and Hamburg.
