Systra Ardanuy will participate in the development of the future tram system in Camp de Tarragona, a region in southern Catalonia, through two contracts covering construction management and technical assistance for systems integration. The first phase of the new network will be approximately 14 km long and will connect Cambrils Centre to Vila-seca Estació, via Salou.
Systra Ardanuy, the company formed following the integration of the Spanish engineering firm Ardanuy into the French group Systra, has won two contracts for the future Camp de Tarragona tram system, a mobility project in southern Catalonia.
The new network will be operated by Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC), the Catalan regional government’s rail operator. Camp de Tarragona is one of the main urban and tourist areas in southern Catalonia, and the project is designed to improve connections between several major local centers.
The first phase of the tram line will be approximately 14 km long and will connect Cambrils Centre with Vila-seca Estació, via Salou. The route will partially reuse the former coastal railway corridor.
Two Contracts for Systra Ardanuy
The first contract, carried out in a consortium with TYPSA, a Spanish consulting and engineering firm, covers construction management. Systra will assist with supervising construction, monitoring the schedule, and coordinating with ADIF, Spain’s railway infrastructure administrator, as well as with municipalities and utility companies.
The contract also covers the supervision of civil, rail, and tram works, through to testing and final validation.
The second contract, carried out in a consortium with META, part of the Quadrante Group, involves technical assistance for systems integration. The objective is to ensure that all tram subsystems operate seamlessly before the start of commercial operations.
These subsystems include infrastructure, power supply, signaling, telecommunications, passenger equipment, safety, and operations.

Joan Serrano, vice president of Systra Ibérica, stated that the Camp de Tarragona tram is a landmark project for mobility in southern Catalonia.
According to him, the project’s success will depend on the ability to coordinate complex construction work, manage sensitive rail interfaces, and integrate all systems necessary for operations.
“These two contracts illustrate Systra’s added value in tram projects that require a comprehensive vision, from construction through to commissioning,” said Joan Serrano.
Construction in a Complex Urban and Rail Environment
The project involves a high degree of technical and urban complexity. Construction will take place in a constrained environment, involving major utility diversions and work beneath the AP-7 highway and existing rail lines.
The future tram system will include slab track, electrification, overhead contact lines, signaling, surveillance systems, passenger information, and communications.
The new contracts build on Systra Ardanuy’s previous involvement in the project. The company conducted the preliminary studies between 2016 and 2018, when the project was still being developed as a tram-train system. Subsequently, it evolved into a full-fledged tram solution.
