Systra wins contract to automate Madrid Metro Line 6

Madrid Metro has selected Systra as the specialist engineering partner to lead the system integration for automation on its busy Line 6. The circular route is vital to the Spanish capital’s transport network, and the project aims to enhance frequency and capacity through advanced driverless technology.

As part of the upgrade, Metro de Madrid is implementing a Grade of Automation 4 (GoA 4) driverless control system alongside platform screen doors. The Systra-Ardanuy joint venture will provide technical assistance and support for full system integration.

“This new contract is significant in more ways than one: It is our first major order for the Madrid Metro, after many other contracts for the Bilbao and Barcelona networks and we are supporting the first automation of an existing metro line in Spain. This is an experience in which Systra is a specialist with many similar contracts in Europe and worldwide. Thanks to Metro de Madrid for entrusting this work to Systra and Ardanuy,” Joan Serrano, Vice President of Systra Ibérica, said.

The initial phase of the project involves preparing Metro de Madrid with the necessary methodologies and documentation to guarantee seamless integration of all subsystems — technically, functionally, operationally, and from a safety perspective.

Following successful synchronisation and integration, Systra will continue to support the project through to full implementation. The automation is expected to improve train speeds, operational efficiency, reduce the number of track switches, and maximise fluidity in metro operations.

Extensive metro automation experience

This contract marks a key new project for Systra in Europe, complementing its recent success automating Stockholm Metro Line 6. The group currently leads similar automation projects worldwide, including:

  • Brussels Metro Lines 1 and 5 and the Line D upgrade in Marseille and Lyon, France
  • Mumbai Metro in India
  • San Francisco and New York metros in the United States

Systra’s teams have also contributed to automation projects on Paris Metro Line 1, Lyon Metro Line B, and Santiago Metro Line 1 in Chile, demonstrating deep expertise in driverless metro systems globally.
