Sydney light rail surpasses 150 million trips

The Sydney light rail network has reached a major milestone, surpassing 150 million passenger trips. To accommodate rising weekend demand, the Minns Labor Government has announced additional services on the L1 Dulwich Hill line.

Increased Weekend Services on L1 Dulwich Hill

Passenger numbers on the L1 line, which connects the Inner West with the city, have grown by 17% between 2023 and 2024. In response, an additional 48 services will be introduced on weekends, reducing wait times for passengers.

Key improvements include:

  • Light rail services running every eight minutes instead of ten between 11 AM and 7 PM.
  • Enhanced capacity to accommodate increasing weekend travel demand.

Sydney’s light rail network: A key part of public transport

Since its return, light rail has played an essential role in connecting key city precincts, including major sporting venues, entertainment districts, and education and health hubs.

The network includes:

  • L1 Dulwich Hill – linking the Inner West with Central
  • L2 Randwick & L3 Kingsford – serving areas like Moore Park, the University of NSW, and Randwick health precinct
  • L4 Westmead & Carlingford (Parramatta Light Rail) – connecting Western Sydney to Parramatta’s CBD, CommBank Stadium, Rosehill Gardens, and Westmead

Sydney’s light rail by the numbers

  • 159,792,304 total light rail trips since opening
  • 118,437 average light rail trips per weekday
  • L2/3 Central Chalmers Street – the busiest station
  • 5 PM – 6 PM – the most popular travel time, with approximately 11,000 trips
  • 15,000 daily interchanges from Sydney Trains & Metro to light rail
  • 7,000 daily interchanges from buses to light rail

Light rail has transformed the way millions of people get around the city. Whether it’s the L2 and L3 taking crowds of thousands to events at Moore Park, or the L1, which has been carrying passengers to and from the Inner West, Sydney’s light rail network has added an ease of movement and connected the city. “In response to growing demand on the L1 Dulwich Hill line, we’re adding close to 50 extra weekend services – meaning shorter wait times for passengers and more capacity,” Minister for Transport John Graham said.
