SWISS and SBB expand Air Rail network

SWISS International Air Lines (SWISS) and Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) are expanding their joint Air Rail network to include three new destinations.

From 27 October 2025, passengers will be able to travel seamlessly between St. Gallen, Konstanz and Locarno and the international flight network via Zurich Airport. Tickets will be available from 16 October 2025 through swiss.com.

With the addition of these new routes, the Air Rail network will grow to 24 destinations across Switzerland, Germany and Austria. The partners aim to make transfers between train and plane even smoother, responding to growing demand for convenient and sustainable travel options.

Heike Birlenbach, Chief Commercial Officer at SWISS, said the new links further strengthen connections between regional centres and international destinations.

“With the new Air Rail destinations, we are building additional bridges between important economic and cultural regions and our international flight network. St. Gallen, as an academic and economic centre, Locarno, a tourist highlight with its international film festival, and Konstanz, the gateway to the Lake Constance region, are ideal additions to our network. This is another step towards more sustainable, seamless and customer-friendly mobility.”

Véronique Stephan, Head of Passenger Transport Market at SBB, emphasised the continued focus on intermodal convenience.

“By adding St. Gallen, Konstanz and Locarno to the Air Rail network, we are continuing our efforts to offer strong multimodal mobility solutions. Through our collaboration with SWISS, customers can easily combine and book rail and air travel. Travelling by train is also comfortable, climate-friendly and fast.”

Greater flexibility for passengers

The SWISS Air Rail service allows passengers to book their entire journey – train and flight – as one combined itinerary. All travel documents are issued directly by SWISS, enabling passengers to check in using a single boarding pass for the full trip.

Rail tickets can be used flexibly, up to one day before departure or one day after arrival, offering travellers more freedom when planning their connections. An intermodal connection guarantee applies to all Air Rail routes, ensuring onward travel in the event of delays.

Members of Miles & More earn miles and points on Air Rail segments, while passengers travelling in SWISS Business or First Class enjoy first-class rail travel with SBB.
