Sweden awards contracts for the Ostlänken high-speed line

Trafikverket, Sweden’s transport infrastructure manager, has awarded two contracts for the construction of sections of the (also known as the Eastern Link).

Ostlänken high-speed line

Hochtief Infrastructure GmbH has won the contract to build the Vagnhärad section, while the Skavsta section has been awarded to Bouygues Travaux Publics. The design-and-build contracts cover a total of 60 km of double-track railway, including embankments, bridges and tunnels. The sections extend between Järna and Skavsta and pass through the municipalities of Södertälje, Trosa and Nyköping. The Vagnhärad contract also includes the construction of a new intermodal passenger travel centre.

Both sections are expected to be completed around 2035.

“This is a milestone for the Ostlänken line, bringing us closer to the goal of enabling more, faster and smoother journeys in the Stockholm/Mälardalen–Östergötland region. We conducted the procurement efficiently and now look forward to strong cooperation with our contractors,” said Magnus Sjöberg, Ostlänken Programme Director.

The Ostlänken high-speed line will be a 160-km double-track railway between Järna and Linköping, with an estimated cost of EUR 10.4 billion (SEK 110.3 billion). Construction has already begun on some subsections, while others remain in the planning phase.

This month, authorities approved the railway plan for the Sjösa–Skavsta section (22 km) in Nyköping municipality. The plan provides a detailed description of the railway’s layout and construction approach and includes an environmental impact assessment. It should be noted that in 2025, Implenia was selected to deliver the section between Nyköping and Skavsta.

Approximately 25% of the new line will be built on bridges or in tunnels — a technical solution designed to minimise environmental impact and improve integration into the existing landscape.

Five new transport hubs will be built in Vagnhärad, Nyköping, Skavsta, Norrköping and Linköping, enabling faster and more efficient passenger connections.

The new line will allow trains to operate at speeds of up to 250 km/h, significantly reducing travel times and increasing the attractiveness of rail transport. The preliminary construction period is estimated between 2024 and 2034, with passenger services scheduled to begin in 2035.

The new railway will efficiently connect the Östergötland region and intermediate towns with the capital Stockholm, enabling faster, safer and more sustainable travel between Stockholm and south-eastern Sweden.
