Strabag Rail won two rail infrastructure contracts in the Czech Republic, with a total value of EUR 360 million.

rail infrastructure contracts

The first project covers the 10 km Nezamyslice – Kojetín section on the Brno–Přerov line that is currently being upgraded for high-speed trains. The Strabag subsidiary is leading the consortium is responsible for the modernisation, which involves double tracking of the line and doubling the line speed, resulting in shorter travel times. The Strabag share of the contract amounts to approximately EUR 110 million. Construction began at the end of May and is scheduled to last around three and a half years, with completion expected by the end of January 2029.

The most prominent structure along the route is a 744-metre-long twin-track railway tunnel being built near Němčice using open-cut construction. A new junction is also being constructed at Hruška, allowing the route to be split and increasing the line’s capacity. Two stops will be upgraded to modern, barrier-free standards. The latter will be relocated westward and expanded to include a new bus terminal with car and bicycle parking. Along the route, 2.3 km of noise barriers will be installed and a number of new reinforced concrete frame and composite bridges constructed. Once completed, train movements along the line will be monitored using the European safety systems ETCS and GSM-R.

The second project involves the extensive modernisation of the high-traffic railway junction at Česká Třebová, which Strabag Rail is also delivering as part of a consortium with Eurovia, Chládek & Tintěra and Elektrizace železnic Praha. EUR 714 million is the total value of the contract of which 35,04% is the share of Strabag Rail. The works include approximately 72 km of track, all overhead lines and 30 bridge structures, making it the largest tender ever issued by the Czech Railway Administration (Správa železnic). Tracks for both passenger and freight traffic will be completely rebuilt and all platforms will be modernised and made barrier-free, including new canopies, and a new pedestrian bridge made of steel will be built to connect the two parts of town, replacing an outdated underpass.

The project is scheduled for completion in early 2032. Preparatory works will be carried out throughout 2025, including the installation of temporary signalling systems, construction of the new Potok junction and initial sections of the rail network. Work has also begun on a new connecting line in Třebovice. The main work at the passenger station are planned for 2028.

The two rail infrastructure contracts are essential for the upgrade of Brno – Přerov railway which is designed to become a high-speed line allowing trains to run at speeds of up to 200 km/h.
