Stadler wins Jena tram contract

TramLink trams

Jenaer Nahverkehr, the public transport company of Jena in Thuringen, Germany, awarded Stadler a contract for the supply of 24 TramLink trams with an option for 19 additional vehicles. The first trams are expected to enter passenger operation from 2023.

The contract also includes maintenance and spare parts supply for the new trams over a period of 24 years with an optional extension for a further 8 years.

EUR 92 million is the value of the contract, of which EUR 23.4 million is the European financing through the European Fund for Regional Development. An investment of EUR 21 million is covered by the state.

The contract includes the delivery of metre-gauge trams in two different vehicle lengths.

16 vehicles are designed with seven sections and with a length of around 42 metres. They have a capacity for 234 passengers, with 75 seats. There are five seats for wheelchair users in the three multifunctional areas.

8 vehicles are designed as five-section trams with a vehicle length of 32 metres. The trams accommodate 174 passengers with 46 seats. In the shorter version, there are two multifunctional areas with a total of four wheelchair spaces.

The low-floor TramLink trams are equipped with five or six doors on each side.

They are equipped with modern passenger information system which is visible from every seat. The customised design improves accessibility for people with reduced mobility and guarantees safety and comfort for passengers and drivers alike.

For the Jena’s trams, a special attention was paid to the energy consumption reduction. The car body structure is made of high-strength stainless steel and the large panes of the passenger compartment are double-glazed for better insulation.

“The new trains are an important investment for public transport and for the climate-friendly future of our city on the Saale. In the long term, they will ensure the environmentally-friendly mobility of our residents, with sufficient space and heightened comfort. The TramLink is a modern and modular multi-joint vehicle. It is characterised by an innovative axle bogie, which enables a quiet and comfortable ride”, Steffen Gundermann, the managing director of Jenaer Nahverkehr said.
