Stadler to supply FLIRT XL trains for Rhein-Ruhr S-Bahn

Stadler will deliver 36 modern FLIRT XL multiple units for operation on the S 5, S 8, and RE 41 lines of the Rhein-Ruhr S-Bahn network. The contract follows the award of services by the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) to VIAS Rail GmbH.

The new trains are designed specifically for the needs of the Rhein-Ruhr S-Bahn and will significantly enhance passenger comfort, accessibility, and capacity.

Features of the FLIRT XL trains

The three-car units are approximately 70 metres long and provide 180 seats, offering more space than the trains currently in service.

Key features include:

  • Six wide doors per side to speed up passenger boarding and alighting
  • Generous multi-purpose areas for wheelchairs, bicycles, pushchairs, and luggage
  • Barrier-free access throughout
  • Onboard toilets in every train

The design aims to improve comfort while ensuring efficient operation on busy regional routes.

Jure Mikolčić, CEO of Stadler Division Germany, said:

“We are proud that our FLIRT XL vehicles will contribute to the modernisation and increased attractiveness of local transport in the VRR. These vehicles combine innovative technology with thoughtful design and meet the highest standards of comfort and efficiency.”

Operations and financing

The trains will be delivered in the familiar green-and-white S-Bahn Rhein-Ruhr livery and operated, maintained, and serviced by VIAS. Financing will follow VRR’s established model, under which the vehicles become the property of the transport authority.

Thomas Eßer, member of VIAS’s management board, commented:

“We are delighted to be able to offer our passengers attractive and comfortable travel on the modern FLIRT XL units from December 2029. We are already one of the largest operators of Stadler FLIRT trains, and these new vehicles will be an excellent addition to our fleet.”

Timetable for Entry into Service

  • December 2029: start of operations on lines S 5 and S 8
  • December 2030: entry into service on line RE 41

The operating contract will run for 15 years, until December 2044.
