Swedish rolling stock leasing company AB Transitio has exercised an option to purchase 13 additional KISS double-decker multiple-unit trains from Stadler, further expanding the regional train fleet serving the Stockholm–Mälaren region.

This new order builds on a long-standing relationship between Transitio and the Swiss train manufacturer, established under a 2016 framework agreement. The new trains will be operated by Mälardalstrafik AB and are scheduled for delivery from spring 2028.
Enhancing regional capacity
The four-car double-decker trains will increase passenger capacity in one of Sweden’s most densely populated and transit-dependent regions. Designed specifically for Nordic climates, the new vehicles feature winterised technology such as closed engine rooms, double-walled gangways, snow-clearing systems, and underfloor heating to maintain reliable operation in extreme cold and heavy snowfall.
Each train can reach speeds of up to 200 km/h and will be produced at Stadler’s St. Margrethen facility in Switzerland.
“The KISS double-decker train combines Nordic robustness with state-of-the-art comfort,” said Ansgar Brockmeyer, Head of Marketing & Sales and Deputy Group CEO of Stadler. “This is ideal for reliable, efficient and comfortable regional transport in the Stockholm Mälaren region. We have a proven track record of effective collaboration with AB Transitio, and I am delighted that we can continue this partnership.”
Designed for nordic comfort
The vehicles will closely mirror the existing fleet of 53 KISS trains already in operation. Each unit accommodates 357 passengers and features a Nordic-inspired interior with a bright, open layout and a higher and wider structure, thanks to the larger loading gauge permitted in the region.
Passenger amenities include adjustable seats, individual reading lights, power sockets, work tables, Wi-Fi, and mobile phone signal boosters. The trains’ lightweight aluminium construction helps reduce energy consumption, contributing to more sustainable operations.
Continued standardisation and reliability
The additional trains will help further standardise Transitio’s rolling stock portfolio and reinforce the robustness of Mälardalstrafik’s services. The continuity of the design also facilitates operational efficiency and reduces maintenance complexity.
“With these additional 13 vehicles we will strengthen the robustness of the Mälardalstrafik fleet and further increase synergies and standardisation in Transitio’s rolling stock fleet,” said Magnus von Bahr, CEO of AB Transitio. “I am happy that we will continue the strong partnership we have with Stadler in this project as well.”
The option order represents an important step in Sweden’s ongoing investment in sustainable and climate-resilient regional rail services.
