Stadler Delivers 100th EURODUAL locomotive to ELP

Stadler has reached a key production milestone with the delivery of its 100th EURODUAL locomotive to European Loc Pool (ELP) at the beginning of September 2025. The dual-mode locomotive has entered service with Havelländische Eisenbahn AG (HVLE), highlighting the strong partnership between Stadler, ELP and HVLE in advancing sustainable freight transport.

The handover of the landmark locomotive marks a significant moment in the success story of the EURODUAL platform. Its placement with HVLE, the original launch customer, underlines the long-standing cooperation between the three companies.

“With this 100th EURODUAL now entering service under ELP’s lease and HVLE’s operation, the concept has truly proven its worth. The locomotive has become the benchmark for dual-mode traction across Europe,” said Iñigo Parra, CEO of Stadler Valencia. “We’re grateful for the vision and trust of our partners at ELP and HVLE in making dual-mode traction a widely adopted solution.”

Expanding ELP’s fleet

Since the signing of a framework agreement with Stadler in 2019, ELP has steadily grown its hybrid fleet, which includes both EURODUAL and EURO9000 locomotives. The 100th EURODUAL enhances ELP’s ability to offer operators flexible leasing solutions for use on both electrified main lines and non-electrified sections.

“The 100th locomotive is far more than just a number for us, it represents the trust our customers place in us and the strength of our partnerships. Being able to celebrate this milestone together with HVLE fills us with great pleasure and pride,” said Willem Goosen, CEO of ELP.

HVLE was Stadler’s first EURODUAL customer, signing a contract in 2017 for ten locomotives. The operator has since played a leading role in showcasing the technology’s versatility and performance across European freight corridors.

Hybrid power for greener freight

The EURODUAL combines zero-emission electric traction with the flexibility of a powerful diesel engine, enabling operators to run heavy-haul services and shunting operations without the need for additional locomotives. This dual capability allows seamless operations across mixed networks and supports the transition to lower-carbon freight.

The locomotive delivers 6.2 MW in electric mode and 2.8 MW in diesel mode, with up to 500 kN of tractive effort and a maximum speed of 120 km/h. It is equipped with ETCS signalling, three-axle bogies, remote monitoring and predictive maintenance to ensure reliability and efficiency.

A proven success story

The delivery of the 100th EURODUAL underscores the platform’s impact in transforming European rail freight, offering operators a balance of performance, flexibility and sustainability. The milestone also reflects the growing demand for hybrid solutions as the industry moves towards greener and more efficient transport.
