South Caucasus Railway orders rolling stock for international traffic

Passenger carriages South Caucasus Railway (SCR), a subsidiary of Russian Railways, the railway transport operator in Armenia, and Transmashholding signed a contract for the supply of a batch of 27 passenger carriages and two EMUs expected to be delivered this year.

The contract covers the delivery of 21 coupe carriage of model 61–4517 and six model 61–4516 non–compartment cars, as well as two EP2D electric trains with comprising two cars each. The 61–4517 cars will be designed with double and four–seat compartments.

The new passenger carriages ordered by the Russian Railways’ subsidiary is the modern serial production of TMH. It became possible to place a service area in the carriages with the installation of vending machines and coffee machines.They are equipped with toilet complex systems with a shower cabin and purifiers for drinking water.

The compartments of the car model 61–4517 are equipped with folding tables and individual safes. When folded, the lower shelves become a neat sofa with headrests, while the upper shelves are almost invisible and look like part of a wall. All seats are equipped with sockets or USB connectors. A TV will be installed in two–seater compartments of these cars. In accordance with the requirements of the carrier, a special color scheme will be used in the upholstery of the cars.

The EP2D two–car electric trains are equipped with safety systems, are providing microclimate with air disinfection modules and environmentally friendly toilets. They will enter passenger transport services on the Yerevan – Gyumri rail route. The electric trains are equipped with two- and six–seat sofas made of wear–resistant materials, handrails in vestibules, and bicycle racks. EP2D is the only electric train on the market of the CIS countries, which can consist of only two cars, with a maximum composition of 12 units. Currently, two two-car EP2D, purchased in 2018, are operating in the SCR fleet.

Within the framework of the contract the new rolling stock will be manufactured by the Tver Carriage Works while the EP2D EMUs will be produced by the Demikhovsky Machine Building Plant (DMZ). The passenger carriages for SCR will arrive in May and June 2021, and the electric trains will be delivered until August 1st, 2021.

The project is part of the renewal of the rolling stock of the South Caucasus Railway and the new trains are expected to enter international transport services, particularly the transport connection between Armenia and Georgia.

The new rolling stock meets all requirements for the comfortability and safety of passenger transport defined in the Technical Regulations of the Customs Union. The cars can be operated on the territory of all countries of the Eurasian Economic Union, such as Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Armenia.
