The Sofia Metro has introduced new-generation Škoda trains on Lines 1, 2, and 4 as part of a modernization program that will optimize schedules and reduce headways. So far, seven of the eight new trains ordered for the Bulgarian capital’s network have been delivered.
The new four-car trains were officially put into service by Metropolitan EAD, the company that operates the Sofia Metro. According to the operator’s management, the trains are equipped with modern real-time video surveillance systems and offer dedicated spaces for people with reduced mobility, cyclists, and parents with strollers.
Nikolai Naidenov, CEO of Metropolitan EAD, stated that the main objective is to improve the quality of service for passengers.
“So far, seven of the eight new, state-of-the-art, highly innovative four-car trains with real-time remote video surveillance have been delivered for the Sofia Metro. Comfortable areas have been created for people with reduced mobility, cyclists, and mothers with strollers. Our focus is on improving service quality, and I believe all our customers will appreciate the positive results achieved and will take good care of the new trains,” said Nikolai Naidenov.
EUR 68.5 million investment
The total investment for the delivery of the eight Škoda metro trains amounts to EUR 68.5 million. The project is being implemented by Metropolitan EAD, and part of the funding is provided through the Operational Program “Transport and Transport Infrastructure” 2014–2020.
An advance payment of EUR 25.4 million, excluding VAT, was also granted for the project. Bulgarian authorities emphasize that the investment also benefits from support through the Recovery and Resilience Plan.
The commissioning event was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Atanas Pekanov, Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev, Deputy Mayor for Transport Viktor Chaușev, representatives of Metropolitan EAD, the Škoda Group, and the managing authorities for transport programs.
Atanas Pekanov described the project as “one of the most positive examples of what Europe brings us,” highlighting the role of European funding in modernizing urban infrastructure.
“This is the Europe we want to see—concrete solutions, not something abstract and vague, but something that connects us,” said the Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister.
Comfort, safety, and energy efficiency
The new metro trains were designed according to modern European standards and bring improvements in comfort, safety, and energy efficiency.
The trains are equipped with next-generation air conditioning systems in every car, energy-efficient equipment, modern control and diagnostic systems, video surveillance with long-term recording storage, improved sound insulation, and reduced vibration levels.
For passengers, the introduction of these trains should mean not only better travel conditions but also a potential increase in frequency, through the optimization of schedules on Lines 1, 2, and 4.
Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev stated that the tens of thousands of people who use the metro daily will be able to travel in better conditions. He emphasized that investments in the metro remain among the priorities of the Bulgarian capital’s administration.
Sofia is preparing new network extensions
The introduction of the new trains comes during a period of expansion for the Sofia metro. Local authorities have announced that three new stations are set to open this year, and by 2027, another six stations are expected to be put into service toward the Geo Milev and Mladost areas, via Slatina.
In the coming months, the opening of the extension toward Poduiane, with three stations, is also expected. Additionally, authorities are preparing to sign a contract for a 2 km extension along “Tsarina Ioana” Boulevard in the Liulin neighborhood and are working on the design of a section toward Studentski Grad, one of Sofia’s most important university districts.
