SNCB to install 5,000 EV charging points

Belgium’s national railway company SNCB will install around 2,500 new electric vehicle charging stations at station car parks over the coming years, each equipped with two charging points. The multi-million euros project will result in a total of about 5,000 charging points nationwide.

The company has selected Belgian energy firm EnergyVision as its partner following a public tender. “EnergyVision stood out in every respect,” SNCB said, noting that the company will deliver the largest number of charging points, offer the most competitive tariffs for passengers, and guarantee 100% green electricity.

The new charging points will be rolled out in phases, with the first to be installed by September 2025. The scheme will extend the current network — already available at 38 stations — to all 420 stations where SNCB provides parking facilities. The aim is to complete the rollout by 2027.

EnergyVision will be responsible for supplying, installing, maintaining, and operating the charging stations for a period of ten years.

Supporting intermodal and sustainable travel

SNCB said the expansion is designed to make combining car and train travel more attractive for passengers. It will also support Belgium’s transition to cleaner transport. “By opting for a large-scale deployment of charging stations in our car parks, SNCB intends to strengthen the sustainable and intermodal nature of train travel,” the company stated.

Passengers who drive electric vehicles will be able to recharge while travelling by train, increasing convenience and reducing range anxiety. The company said the broader network will improve the chances of finding an available charging point, even at peak times, and could encourage those without home charging facilities to switch to electric vehicles for their commute.
