Swedish operator Snälltåget will introduce a special night service between Malmö, Stockholm and Narvik in northern Norway in November 2026. The train will cross the Arctic Circle and give passengers access to some of the best areas in Scandinavia for observing the Northern Lights.
The service will depart from Malmö on Monday, November 23, 2026, and will travel via Stockholm to northern Sweden, to Narvik. The return trip is scheduled for Friday, November 27, 2026, from Narvik to Stockholm and Malmö.
The Malmö–Narvik route is 2,156 kilometers long, a long-distance rail journey through Sweden, from the Skåne region to the mountainous landscapes north of the Arctic Circle. At the destination, passengers can stay for several days for accommodation, mountain activities and observing the Northern Lights.
From Malmö to Narvik, via Stockholm and northern Sweden
According to the preliminary timetable, the train will depart Malmö on Monday, November 23, 2026, at noon, and will travel north through Stockholm, before crossing Sweden and beyond the Arctic Circle.
On the final northern route, the train will stop at important areas for Arctic tourism, such as Kiruna, Abisko and Björkliden, before arriving in Narvik, Norway, on Tuesday afternoon.
The return journey is scheduled for Friday, November 27, 2026, departing from Narvik and arriving the next day in Stockholm and Malmö.
Snälltåget states that the times are preliminary and may be changed depending on infrastructure work.
Abisko, one of the recommended destinations for the northern lights
For passengers who want to see the northern lights, the operator recommends accommodation in Abisko, a town known for its good conditions for observing the phenomenon. One option suggested by the company is STF Abisko Turiststation, located close to nature and the Abisko National Park.
Other accommodation options are available in Björkliden and Kiruna, for travelers who want to combine the train journey with activities in the mountain area.
The new special route highlights one of the most spectacular railway axes in northern Europe, passing through mountain areas, arctic towns and landscapes associated with winter tourism in Scandinavia.
Dining car on the route
The Krogen dining car, used by Snälltåget on its night trains, will be available on board. Passengers will be able to enjoy hot meals during the journey north, and the operator recommends reserving a table and pre-ordering the menu when purchasing a ticket.
The dining car will also include a self-service area, where travelers can buy coffee, tea, water, soft drinks, sandwiches, pastries and snacks.
For this trip, lunch will cost around EUR 18 and dinner around EUR 27.5. Breakfast can be booked in the dining car or as a compartment package for around EUR 13.7. Vegan, gluten-free and lactose-free options are also available for pre-ordered meals.
Private compartments and seats in shared compartments
Snälltåget will offer several comfort options. Passengers can choose a private compartment, available for one person or for a group of up to six people. The compartment is configured for sitting down when boarding and is converted into a sleeping compartment for the night. Bed linen is included and passengers prepare their own beds.
A more affordable option is a seat in a shared compartment, shared with other passengers. In sleeper mode, the compartment has three berths on each side, and the upper berths are accessible by ladder.
Interrail is valid on board, but reservations are required. Interrail travelers can book a private compartment on the night train from 2,499 Swedish kronor per compartment.
If passengers book a return journey and choose a private compartment, they receive a 20% discount.
