Slovakia: EC to fund tram acquisition in Košice

01-slovaciaThe European Commission approved a project worth EUR 47.8 million, with EUR 38.6 million coming from the Cohesion Fund, for the purchase of 33 new trams in Košice.
This project aims to encourage passengers to take public transport rather than cars, hence resulting in a reduction in road congestion and of emissions of exhaust gases.
The trams will be introduced on the existing tram network, primarily on the sections with the best technical conditions and where the traffic is concentrated. This will improve the operational and financial sustainability of the public transport system provided by Dopravný podnik mesta Košice (DPMK).
The project is co-financed under the Operational Programme Transport in Slovakia, priority axis 4 “Infrastructure and rolling stock of integrated transport systems”, under the programming period 2007-2013.
Commissioner for Regional Policy Corina Creţu said: “I am glad to have adopted this project today; environment-friendly public transport systems have a great impact on the attractiveness of a city for businesses and tourism, on the competitiveness of the local economy and on the quality of the people’s everyday life.”
