The Škoda Group has been selected to supply trams for the new urban transit network in Uppsala, thereby strengthening its presence in the Nordic market.
The contract calls for the initial delivery of 20 bidirectional trams, with an option to purchase an additional 18 vehicles, which could bring the total fleet to 38 units.
The agreement also includes 12 years of maintenance and overhaul services, providing regional authorities with a comprehensive solution for the entire life cycle of the vehicles. These services will cover both the vehicles and critical components, helping to increase the reliability and availability of the tram fleet.
The total value of the contract, including additional options and associated services, could reach EUR 270 million.
“The new trams will combine technology proven for Nordic conditions with a high level of comfort, accessibility, and safety for passengers, drivers, and the urban environment,” said Jan Christoph Harder, President for the West and North Regions at the Škoda Group.
New Network and State-of-the-Art Trams
The new tram network in Uppsala will be built entirely from scratch and will serve as the backbone of the city’s future public transportation system. The vehicles supplied by Škoda will be based on the platform already successfully used in the city of Tampere, Finland, but adapted to the specific requirements of the Swedish city.
The trams will be 38 meters long, feature a fully low-floor design, and operate in both directions. Each vehicle will be able to carry up to 186 passengers and will have 80 fixed seats.
Passengers will enjoy modern amenities such as USB ports, digital information systems, designated spaces for people with reduced mobility and strollers, as well as improved visual and audio information systems.
The new trams will also incorporate advanced digital safety technologies. These include a collision-avoidance system developed by the Škoda Group, capable of detecting vehicles, pedestrians, and obstacles, as well as an intelligent system for automatically limiting speed on curves and in other sensitive areas of the route.
The new tram network in Uppsala will feature 17 km of double-track line and 22 stations, connecting the city’s main urban development areas, university campuses, hospitals, transit hubs, and the central train station.
