Škoda Group unveils new tram for Bergamo

Škoda Group has presented a new tram for Bergamo, a city in northern Italy. The bidirectional trams destined for Bergamo will run on a newly built line linking Bergamo railway station with the nearby town of Villa d’Almé.

The bidirectional, low-floor tram consists of five sections and has been designed precisely to meet the needs of the city and its local transport operator. The vehicle has been engineered in accordance with the strictest European standards, with safety ensured by an advanced protection system. This includes an anti-collision system that actively monitors the area in front of the tram and helps prevent accidents. As a result, not only passengers and drivers are protected, but also pedestrians and other road users in the historic centre and surrounding areas.

Škoda Group will deliver ten trams to the city by the end of this year. “The delivery of the first tram, scheduled for March, represents a major milestone towards the activation of the new line and a further step forward in developing increasingly sustainable and efficient mobility for our region,” said Gian Battista Scarfone, CEO of TEB Tramvie Elettriche Bergamasche.

Škoda Group won the contract in July 2023 to supply ten ForCity Classic trams, including their maintenance for three years. Although the vehicles are based on the ForCity Classic platform, the manufacturer has fully adapted them to Bergamo’s requirements. These include operation on local infrastructure, covering urban and suburban sections, as well as running through tunnels.

The new tram for Bergamo is 33 metres long, offering a capacity of 281 passengers and a fully low-floor design for easy, step-free access. Eight wide double doors positioned along the entire length of the vehicle will ensure rapid passenger flow. Features include a fully air-conditioned interior and driver’s cab, modern LED lighting, and dedicated spaces for passengers with reduced mobility. The tram is also designed for easier and more cost-effective maintenance thanks to improved access to technical components and a durable construction intended to ensure a long service life.

“Italy is a growing market for public transport, and the fact that Bergamo will be another city operating Škoda trams is clear proof of the high level of Czech research and development. Production of all units is in full swing and we are keeping to the planned schedule. The first trams will appear in Italy as early as March,” said Olesea Lachi, Vice President South & East Europe at Škoda Group.
