Singapore puts AI to work on the metro network

Singapore is preparing for a new phase of digitalization in urban rail transit, with fully automated MRT depots, AI-based sensors, and drones for infrastructure inspections. The government will invest SGD 800 million (EUR 542.12 million) in transportation research and innovation over the next five years, but maintains that technology should transform jobs, not just eliminate them.

Artificial intelligence, robotics, and autonomous systems will play an increasingly important role in the operation and maintenance of Singapore’s MRT network.

The government’s plans include fully automated MRT depots and maintenance centers, infrastructure inspections using smart sensors and drones, as well as systems capable of identifying problems more quickly and reducing the duration of disruptions.

MRT, the acronym used in Singapore for the rapid urban rail transit network, is the backbone of public transportation in the city-state.

The transformation of the rail sector is part of a broader program, discussed on July 7 in the Singapore Parliament, regarding the future of transportation and the effects of automation on employees and passengers.

Fully Automated MRT Depots

One of the objectives is to expand automation beyond train operations to include activities carried out in depots.

The government is talking about fully automated MRT depots, where train inspection, preparation, and maintenance can be carried out more efficiently using digital systems, robots, and artificial intelligence.

For passengers, authorities estimate that the technology will lead to more reliable rail services and a faster return to normal operations in the event of network failures or incidents.

Automation could also reduce the time required for certain repetitive tasks, allowing technical staff to focus on complex interventions and situations that require human experience and judgment.

The government has not specified which depots will be the first to be converted, nor has it provided a complete timeline for the program.

AI and Drones for Infrastructure Inspection

The technology is already being used in Singapore’s land transportation system for routine inspections.

Artificial intelligence-based sensors and drones can inspect rail and road infrastructure, taking over tasks that traditionally required field teams to be dispatched.

The systems can collect images and data on the condition of tracks, structures, and other equipment, and staff can analyze areas where potential problems have been flagged.

According to the government, the goal is not only to reduce the amount of manual labor but also to improve safety. Some inspections require employees to work near tracks or in hard-to-reach areas, and the use of drones can limit the time spent in such environments.

The data collected automatically can also help transition from maintenance performed at fixed intervals to interventions based on the actual condition of the equipment.

Fewer Repetitive Tasks, More Technical Roles

The discussion about automation is inevitably accompanied by questions about the future of transportation workers.

Singapore’s official position is that artificial intelligence and robotics should lead to safer, more productive, and higher-skilled jobs, not to the sudden replacement of staff.

In the rail sector, this shift could mean greater demand for specialists in software, automation, robotics, data analysis, digital systems maintenance, and control center operations.

At the same time, some repetitive or predominantly manual tasks will gradually be taken over by automated systems.

The government says that employees will need retraining and professional development programs to transition into these new roles. This approach applies to the entire transportation sector, from rail and road transport to aviation and port operations.

Students Sent Directly to Rail Operators

Singapore aims to prepare future employees while they are still in school.

The plans include structured internships with rail operators for students enrolled in technical programs focused on rapid transit engineering. Partnerships between transportation companies and educational institutions are set to be expanded so that students can work directly with operators and engineers.

The training will place greater emphasis on artificial intelligence, automation, robotics, engineering, and the operation of transportation systems.

Authorities hope this will bridge the gap between the skills taught in schools and those required by digitized transportation networks.

EUR 543 million investment

The government will allocate SGD 800 million (542.12 EUR million) for transportation research and innovation over the next five years.

The funding is not intended exclusively for railways. The program covers land transportation, aviation, logistics, and the maritime sector—areas that together account for approximately 10% of Singapore’s economy and provide around 7% of jobs.

In aviation, investments are focused on AI-assisted air traffic management systems, while in ports, smart networks, robots, and autonomous technologies for moving cargo are being developed.

Rail, however, remains one of the areas where the effects can be directly observed by the public: more efficiently maintained trains, automatically inspected infrastructure, and faster responses when problems arise.

The government’s message is that the subway system will not become a “driverless” one. But the work behind the scenes will gradually shift from on-site and repetitive tasks to computer screens, control systems, data analysis, and the maintenance of automated technologies.
