Siemens Mobility wins Hamburg metro CBTC contract

Hamburg’s U2 and U4 Hamburger Hochbahn awarded Siemens Mobility a contract to build the train control system for Hamburg’s U2 and U4 lines which will allow trains to run at 100-second intervals.

“For the mobility transition, we need powerful and reliable systems that create real customer benefits. Through the U-Bahn100 project, we’re creating a service for our passengers that is simply unbeatable: a subway train every 100 seconds – on time, reliable, environmentally friendly, and effectively available at all times,” Henrik Falk, CEO of Hochbahn said.

Siemens Mobility will install the CBTC as an upgrade to the conventional train control system used by operator on its U2 and U4 metro lines. The new technology will put significantly more trains on the track in the future, increasing the capacity. In addition, CBTC also improves punctuality, reliability, and energy consumption.

Siemens Mobility will supply and install its digital Trainguard MT CBTC solution for the conventional Sicas ECC interlockings currently in service on the two metro lines. In addition, the company is also supplying the relevant technology that needs to be installed in the metro cars. Trainguard MT will then be available on the U2 line between the Christuskirche and Mümmelmannsberg stations and on the entire U4 line.

The new technology makes metro operation more energy-efficient with savings of up to 20 percent and improves passenger comfort through smoother acceleration and braking.

“This project is an important milestone on the road to transforming mobility in Hamburg. In the future, trains on the Hamburg’s U2 and U4 lines will be able to run every 100 seconds. Our technology combines greater track capacity, maximum availability, and lower energy requirements with the highest possible level of safety,” Andre Rodenbeck, CEO for Rail Infrastructure at Siemens Mobility said.

The U-Bahn100 project involves the development of city’s metro system by expanding the network and the installation of new technologies to provide safer, energy-efficient and faster transport services. Recently, the public transport company launched the construction for the first 5.8 km section of the U5 line between Bramfeld and City Nord. The U5 line will be 24 km long running through Hamburg with 100 percent green electricity. In addition, the company has also launched the tender to acquire 250 metro trains with a firm order for 48 vehicles.
