Siemens Mobility will completely modernize the traffic control and management system on the Zillertalbahn, one of the best-known narrow-gauge lines in Austria.
The project covers the entire 32-km route between Jenbach and Mayrhofen in the state of Tyrol and is the largest project in Austria based on Trainguard STC technology.
The contract signed between Siemens Mobility and the operator Zillertaler Verkehrsbetriebe includes the implementation of the new digital rail traffic control system, as well as its maintenance for a period of at least 20 years.
Commissioning is scheduled for 2028.
The new solution will monitor and coordinate traffic along the entire line, which includes 10 stations, 8 stops, 82 switches, and a fleet of 16 trains. The system uses radio communications and satellite technology for continuous traffic monitoring, providing a higher level of safety and operational efficiency.

Digitalization and Enhanced Safety
The modernization of the control system is one of the key components of the comprehensive transformation program for the Zillertal Railway, which also includes the complete decarbonization of the line through electrification and the introduction of sustainable solutions for rail operations.

This project meets the ever-increasing demands for safety, efficiency, and digitalization and is closely linked to our decarbonization program, which includes the new overhead contact line and sustainable solutions for rail operations. In this way, we are laying the foundation for modern, environmentally friendly mobility in the Zillertal Valley,” said Andreas Lackner, a member of the Board of Directors of Zillertaler Verkehrsbetriebe.
The Zillertalbahn line has been providing rail transport in Tyrol for over 120 years, and the new system will enable it to operate according to modern standards. Passengers will benefit from real-time information on train arrivals and departures, available both at stations and online. Additionally, requests for stops at stations will be transmitted digitally, which will help optimize traffic flow.
In terms of safety, each train will be equipped with on-board units that assist the engineer by automatically calculating braking curves, continuously monitoring speed, and automatically applying the brakes if speed limits are exceeded.
The new system will also integrate 23 railway level crossings, so that trains will be able to cross only after confirmation that the safety systems are functioning properly. In the event of a malfunction, the technology will automatically stop the train before the level crossing.
Trainguard STC is a solution developed by Siemens Mobility specifically for regional and narrow-gauge lines, offering a high level of automation without the need to install complex signaling infrastructure along the route. By using radio communications and satellite positioning, the system reduces operating and maintenance costs while increasing traffic capacity and safety.
