Shortlisted unveiled for HS2 signalling contract

signalling and control systemsHS2 Ltd has shortlisted four companies to deliver and install the signalling and control systems for the Phase 1 and Phase 2A of the British high-speed railway line. The contract is expected to be awarded in 2022.

Alstom Transport UK, Hitachi Rail, Siemens Mobility and Thales Transport & Security are the shortlisted companies for the GBP 540 million (EUR 625.3 million) contract.

The contract involves the design and build of the signalling systems that will control trains travelling at speeds of up to 360 km/h between London, Birmingham and Crewe, where HS2 trains will join the existing West Coast Mainline.

The signalling and control systems contract covers the Control, Command, Signalling (CCS) and Traffic Management (TM) systems which include:

  • the design, manufacture, supply, installation, supervision, inspection, safety authorisation, testing, commissioning and maintenance until handover to trial operations of the Phase One and Phase 2a CCS & TM systems;
  • the potential extension of the Phase One / 2a TM system to cover Phase 2b;
  • the CCS and TM works required for the Phase 2b alterations at Euston station;
  • the provision of technical support services for the CCS & TM systems for up to 25 years.

The CCS and TM systems provided on HS2 will utilise European Train Control System (ETCS) signalling and the latest TM technology.

Instead of traditional coloured lights, HS2 will use a high-tech signalling system that feeds information directly into the cab, allowing faster and more frequent services.

HS2 Phase One will be opened between 2029 and 2033 running from London to Birmingham 216 km through 50 km of tunnels and 16 km of viaducts. Phase One has a funding envelope of GBP 45 billion (EUR 50.8 billion).

In December, HS2 Ltd shortlisted the bidders for the track systems and for tunnel and lineside mechanical and electrical (M&E) systems.

Recently, the Phase 2A north from the West Midlands to Crewe has received the Royal Assent.
